Become a support runner
“It felt like a community was being built with running at the heart.
- Support Runner at the Great South Run
Running is more than just a sport - it’s a way to connect with others and be part of a supportive community. We want to ensure that disabled runners have the same opportunity to experience this. Our Supported Runner Project, in partnership with Nissan, is designed to help disabled individuals achieve their personal running goals - whether that’s completing a 10km race or a half marathon.
Support Runners play a key role in enabling disabled people to take part in running events and reach the finish line by offering assistance in various ways, such as:
Pre-event discussions to understand needs and preferences.
Providing support on race day, which may include pacing, running with them, guidance, or encouragement.
Post-event check-ins to reflect on the experience and recovery.
Support Runners receive a free entry to the running event and access to training and guidance to help them in their role.
For now, we are putting a hold on inviting new Support Runners, but if you’d like to learn more about the role and how it works, please contact: supportedrunner@whitehead.foundation
Our Support Runners are:
• Positive and supportive
• Solution focused
• Good at getting to know people
• Patient and non-judgemental.
• Compassionate and engaging.
